The Difference between LEARN and STUDY

What are the main differences between LEARN and STUDY? This is a question which many people ask us, especially for those of you who are learning or studying English.

Now let’s see how different the two English words “learn” and “study” are!

  • To Learn – means “gain or acquire knowledge of or skill in (something) by study, experience, or being taught.”
  • To Study – means “devote time and attention to gaining knowledge of (an academic subject), especially by means of books.’’

Therefore studying is one way to learn. Learning is gaining knowledge by studying, and studying is done to learn things.

Below are some examples showing how these two words are used.

  • He learned about computer by reading a book.
  • He studied computer science in college.
